Broken, sluggish, and sticky piano keys are the result of changes in relative humidity. Piano key tops, piano key bed, metal, felt, cloth and piano key wood all swell and contract at different rates. Keys, keytops, and flanges can break. Action parts, hammer butt plates, flanges, hammer heads can become loose. It is common to see the flange pin and butt plate come loose allowing side to side hammer play that can contact the adjacent hammers. Additionally, felt can deteriorate, damper and wippen flange screws can come loose causing clicking sounds when a key is struck. These problems go away with the installation of a Dampp-Chaser Piano Life Saver System.
